Next week, delegates from AIA Utah, AIA Northern Utah and AIA Central Utah will be voting on your behalf. Let them know how you see the issues and the candidates.
Who's voting: John Shuttleworth, AIA, President, AIA Utah, (801) 531-7600. Scott Jensen, AIA, President-Elect, AIA Central Utah Section, (801) 861-7871.
What are the key issues?

- The Elimination of Supplemental Dues (Bylaws Amendment 08-A) The Board of Directors sponsors this amendment. It calls for implementation in 2009.
- Outreach and Development of Practice Tools for a Sustainable Future (Resolution 08-1) A call to AIA "to reach out to every individual member with the targeted message that we must incorporate aggressive sustainability goals into every facet of our practices; and to foster the development of tools for members to assist them in incorporating sustainability into their practices."
- Component Partnership Committee (Resolution 08-2) The Component Partnerships Committee will sunset in 2008 without continued support from the Board. The purpose of this resolution is to persude the Board to continue the committee. The CPC is at the heart of figuring out how AIA should be organized to most seamlessly and cost-effectively meet the needs of members.
- Regional Representation on the AIA Board of Directors (Resolution 08-3) The purpose of this resolution is to authorize the AIA Board preparation of bylaws amendments to allow the election of Associate Members to serve as Directors on the AIA Board. Currently the AIA Board includes two Associate Members: the President of the National AIA Associates Committee and the Immediate Past President, who serves on the national Executive Committee. By passing this resolution, Associate Members would be eligible for election by any region to the Board of Directors. Some will see this as an acceptance of a broader view of AIA representation, while others will see it as a dilution of the focus of the organization on representing licensed architects.
- AIA Public Response to Unfair and Inappropriate Regulatory Activities (Resolution 08-4) The intent of this resolution is for AIA "to establish a public response to encourage regulatory activities that are fair, timely, and built upon consensus-based regulations and practices in all communities, and that the practice of architecture within a state should only be govenered by the state board that issues the license to practice within that state." (The sponsor of the resolution is AIA New York State.)
- A Continuing Sustainable Education Agenda (Resolution 08-5) The purpose of this resolution is for AIA "to encourage the topics of ecological literacy and sustainability or green design to be incorporated into the structure of architectural educaiton and the Intern Devleopment Program."
- Integration of Universal Accessibility into the Built Environment (Resolution 08-6) The purpose of this resolution is "to promote, support, and implement the intent and goals of accessibility for all, as legislated in the Americans With Disabilities Act (ADA), by means of integration of universal design into the built environment."

The AIA and Google Earth
This year, the AIA has teamed up with Google Earth to create new layers for Blueprint for America and America's Favorite Architecture. To access these layers, you will first have to have the Google Earth program on your computer. You can download it for free at earth.google.com.
In Google Earth, go to the left navigation pane entitled "Layers." The AIA layers are located under "Featured Layers." Choose either America's Favorite Architecture or Blueprint for America, and then click on any icon to view the project. You can also use your mouse to zoom in to the location.
